Election 2010: A Conservative Democrat for Speaker?

House Republicans are prone to gain 54 or 55 seats on Tuesday, followed by John Boehner's election to the Speakership in January. Both of which have Conservatives and Republicans alike celebrating with joyous proclamations, while Democrats ponder their dark future in the company of alcoholic spirits.

But there's one question that many people have neglected to ask: who would be the Democratic candidate against Mr.Boehner? Strangely enough, it could be a member of the Blue Dog Coalition who has opposed President Obama on several key elements of his very unpopular liberal agenda. Everyone should meet Heath Shuler, a Democrat Congressman out of Republican country in North Carolina.

Mr.Shuler was first elected to the House in 2006 by defeating an Incumbent Republican by 17,000 votes, and was subsequently re-elected with 62% of the vote in 2008. He was one of eight Democrats to stand against the $819 billion stimulus bill, he opposed all versions of ObamaCare, and he even voted against the TARP bailouts twice in late 2008.

According to a Politico.com report on Mr.Shuler's debate with his Republican opponent this week, the two-term Democrat Congressman will vote for himself over Nancy Pelosi if she runs for Speaker again, and he is considering a full-out run for the position "if there is no viable alternative". Viable in North Carolina would not include Steny Hoyer.

That's absolutely phenomenal. We now have a member of the soon to be dead & forgotten Conservative wing/faction within the Democrat Party on the brink of running for Speaker, just two years after the most liberal President in American history was elected. A Shuler run would definitely please Southern Democrats such as Gene Taylor, who recently touted his Presidential vote for John McCain.

It's amazing what two years can do to a Country. Any thoughts?
