Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine's 1st district) was elected to her first House term in 2008 by 36,000 votes, which is a small margin in a district that's rated D+8 by the Cook Political Report. However, anybody who thought such a district could elect a Republican was foolhardy, stupid, and incompetent. Quite possibly one those unqestionable truths in American politics.
Or was it?
Citizens of Maine's 1st congressional district gave President Bush 43% of their vote in both 2000 and 2004, gave Washington a Republican Representative in 1994 and gave Senator Susan Collins (R), who actually defeated Chellie Pingree head-to-head in the 2002 Senatorial race, a strong base of support in her 2008 re-election campaign, which was victorious.
That's just the appetizer my friends.
According to a new Critical Insights/Portland Press Herald survey of 295 likely voters, the freshmen Democratic Representative is now trailing her Republican opponent, Dean Scontras, by four points with just three more days until election day. Talk about a dramatic reverse of fortunes in such a short period of time.
Critical Insights survey of 295 likely voters:
Dean Scontras (R) - 45%.
Chellie Pingree (D) - 41%.
Undecided/unsure - 14%.
Any thoughts?
