In spite of what you might think, rheumatology is mostly an outpatient speciality. The Happy Hospitalist offers some perspective.
So why shouldn't you consult a rheumatologist for inpatient consult a swollen joint? Because the answer is always:
- It's not a rheumatological disease.
- And if it is, give 'em steroids and see what happens.
- It's never Lupus. Ever.
That having been said, when I see anything other than gout/pseudogout I am happy to ask for a consult. Did I mention I work at a teaching hospital?
