Internet Kill Switch Coming to a Country Near You...

We all know the saying, "The best laid schemes of mice and men often go askew..." It comes from a famous poem by Robert Burns, Ode to a Mouse. I was reminded of the phase this morning as I was reading an article at theage.com.au. The fascinating graphic below puts into context the power any government has over its people when lines of communication can be shut down.

Luckily for us, "Senator Susan Collins, a co-sponsor of the bill, said that unlike in Egypt, where the government was using its powers to quell dissent by shutting down the internet, it would not." Color me skeptical, but I simply don't believe her. You see I am reminded of the conclusion of the above referenced poem...

"But Mouse, you are not alone,
In proving foresight may be vain:
The best laid schemes of mice and men
Go often askew,
And leaves us nothing but grief and pain,
For promised joy!"
