Today marks the start of the 112th Congress, with the Majority Republican House
being sworn in by new Speaker John Boehner of Ohio. The new Chambers will have over 50 new members. Speaker Boehner in his opening speech promised more transparency and accountability
.
Republicans have promised to cut $100 billion from the budget-- which would be a good start, but it it not enough to close the gap. One must wonder if the new Congress will be willing to do the long-term restructuring of Social Security and Medicare that would be necessary for our long-term solvency considering the retirement of the Baby Boomers. But as I said, it's a start:
House Republicans have also pledged to cut $35 million from their own congressional budget. Rep. Kristie Noem, R-S.D., considered an up and coming leader and Tea Party budget hawk, said Republicans will "step forward and start cutting money and they're going to start with themselves."
So let's see how it goes. Hopefully it can't get any worse.
