It's being reported this morning that Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke is going to be named the next Ambassador to China, replacing Jon Huntsman Jr, who submitted his resignation last month. Locke, who has served as Secretary for two years now, is the son and grandson of Chinese immigrants to America.
But what does this mean for the Commerce Department?
Secretary Locke, as you might remember, was President Obama's third choice for Secretary of Commerce after New Hampshire's senior Senator Judd Gregg, who could not square Obama's Liberal policies with his own Conservatism, and Bill Richardson, who was disgraced by a pay-to-play scandal in New Mexico.
I am guessing that President Obama's Commerce bench is very small and that there are few candidates to choose from, unless they go bipartisan and select a Conservative businessman/CEO, which would not be unlikely considering the Senate is now only 53-47 Democrat and could easily reject a liberal appointee.
Keep your eyes fixed on Washington for the next couple of months, because a showdown between the President and Senate Republicans could be looming in the Commerce Department.
What say you?
