Qaddafi Forces Counterattack, Claim Oil Refinery

Libya appears to be descending into full-blown civil war. Forces loyal to Libyan dictator Muommar Qaddafi have launched an attack on an oil facility in the western part of the country. Libyan fighter jets also bombed an ammunition depot controlled by the rebels. According to Qaddafi himself, the oil field is now in the control of his forces.

In the capital, Gadhafi vowed, "We will fight until the last man and woman" and he warned that thousands of Libyans will die if U.S. and NATO forces intervene in the conflict.

The attack on Brega facility shows that the Qaddafi forces appear to have some cohesion. If they have actually captured the second largest oil plant in the country, it would be a sign that they are here to stay, at least for the short term.
