Generals Stanley McChrystal and David Petraeus have successfully put in place counter-insurgency operations that work, and last year's troop surge has driven the Taliban out of their spiritual homeland in the vital Kandahar Province - not to mention the equally important Helmand Province as well.
But for all our victories, we are still lacking in one crucial aspect: Afghanistan's border security.
It does not matter how many Taliban fighters we kill this month, because as long as they are able to easily sneak in and out of the country through the porous Afghanistan/Pakistan border, we will be unable to permanently defeat them and thus struggle to maintain our military advances and eventually win the War.
Which is why I'm proposing the following three-step plan:
- The United States and our NATO allies should lead a surge in the Taliban controlled provinces that border Pakistan.
- The United States and our NATO allies should look into building more bases and outposts along the border, so we can prevent the Taliban from reaching population centers and government targets at all.
- The United States and our NATO allies should draw up preliminary plans to seal the porous border with a well guarded and regulated border fence, which would be patrolled by Afghanistan and NATO forces.
What say you?
