The Political Meaning of Petraeus at CIA

With the news that President Obama is going to appoint Leon Panetta to replace Bob Gates at Defense, and General Petraeus to replace Panetta at the CIA, both Conservatives and Liberals are attempting to figure out the political implications of Petraeus' move, and both have been wrong.

Some Conservatives are wondering whether Petraeus is a closet Democrat looking to pounce in 2016, while some Liberals are hoping this appointment will make the General look connected to Obama and ruin his own electoral hopes down the road, such as what has happened to Huntsman.

I've been shaking my head at both opinions.

General Petraeus is not accepting this appointment because he is secretly attempting to win the nomination of the political party that concurred when MoveOn.org released their "General Betray Us" advertisement back in 2007, and he has more than once confirmed his political allegiance as Republican, although he hasn't voted since the Iraq War started.
