Thompson Plans WI Senate Run

Tommy Thompson, the former four-term governor of Wisconsin and member of President Bush's Health and Human Services Secretary, is reportedly eying the Senate seat being vacated by Senator Herb Kohl.

Furthermore, former Senator Russ Feingold may decline to run, leaving the seat open for Thompson. Thompson was re-elected in 1998 with 59.66% of the vote.

Thompson’s entry would even further intensify a race that already seems destined to be one of the most watched in the nation: Wisconsin has been at the center of the national political discussion since Gov. Scott Walker’s showdown with unions over collective bargaining in February that prompted weeks of protests at the state capitol in Madison. In the months since, even what would have almost certainly otherwise been a sleepy race for a state supreme court seat turned into a pitched battle, now in its third week of the recount.

Much of the focus on the Democratic side has been on Russ Feingold, who lost his re-election bid last year to Sen. Ron Johnson. But he has not exactly leapt at the opening, with his former chief of staff issuing a statement last week saying that “Running for office in 2012 is not something Russ is eager to do or has been planning to do.”
