An atheist group has filed suit today in order to prevent the display of a cross at a World Trade Center memorial. In a press release, the American Atheists stated that the display is "an impermissible mingling of church and state."
The cross in question are actual beams were part of the actual World Trade Center. As the building collapsed around it, the metal in the cross held steady and, when the dust had cleared,
the beams held firm.

The cross soon after the attacks |
Now it is seen as an abomination by the American Atheists, even though it was formed by the attacks and not specifically by Christians trying to push their religion.
The cross was moved from a Church on Saturday to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. The President of the Museum, Joe Daniels, defended the move, saying that it is "an important part of our commitment to bring back the authentic physical reminders that tell the history of 9/11 in a way nothing else could."
But the American Atheists will have none of it.
Their lawsuit names a long list of defendants. Amongst them are the state of New Jersey, the city of New York, its Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and the governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie.

Mr. Silverman |
In a statement, David Silverman, president of the atheist group, said, "The WTC cross has become a Christian icon. It has been blessed by so-called holy men and presented as a reminder that their god, who couldn't be bothered to stop the Muslim terrorists or prevent 3,000 people from being killed in his name, cared only enough to bestow upon us some rubble that resembles a cross. It's a truly ridiculous assertion."
