Oops ~ "Massive Protest At White House Against Alberta Tar Sands Pipeline" Draws 65 People

As much as he would like you to think this is about Canada's Oil Sands, it's not. If it were he would take his motley crew of merry men (and women) north of the border and start sitting on a work site. No, his problem is the Keystone XL pipeline that will assist in distributing Canadian oil to the United States. He would rather this oil were transported to a port city and shipped to China. Why not? We are busy shipping oil from the middle east, it only makes sense that North America would ship its oil half way around the world as well.

For no good reason a protest has been organized. Many lefty blogs are describing this as a "massive protest" at the White House to against the Alberta tar sands pipeline. The protest is scheduled to run from today through September 3.

Massive seems to be a bit of a misnomer as the group were only able to muster 65-70 today.

Dozens of environmentalist protesters have been arrested outside the White House on the first day of a planned two-week protest over a proposed oil pipeline from Canada to theU.S. Gulf Coast.

Park Police spokesman David Schlosser tells WJLA-TV that 65 people were arrested Saturday. The protest is scheduled to run through Sept. 3.

The protesters want President Barack Obama to deny a permit for the 1,700-mile Keystone XL pipeline. It would go through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas to refineries in Houston and Port Arthur, Texas.

Protester Gus Speth, co-founder of the Natural Resources Defense Council, told the Wall Street Journal the pipeline would continue the nation's reliance on fossil fuels.

TransCanada says its pipeline would provide jobs and needed oil.

Organizers claim up to 2000 people have registered to take part in sit-ins at the White House over the next 2 weeks. It would seem the plan is for 50-100 people to participate on a daily basis. By my calculation that comes to 700-1400 people. Not what I would describe as massive, or even big.

Really, the whole thing seems so tedious it may describe why the President has chosen this particular week to run away from Washington for the next 10 days.
