When Leon Panetta was first nominated for Defense Secretary, I was a little hesitant. He was a former White House Chief of Staff under Bill Clinton and a former Democrat Representative for sixteen years. I focused on his politics, and now regret that decision, especially with today's news.
Secretary Panetta has a message for Pakistan: dismantle the Haqqani network, which was responsible for the deadly attack on Kabul last week, and which operates out of the lawless tribal areas of Pakistan, or we will.
With the War in Afghanistan shifting from defeating al-Qaida and Taliban forces, which we have successfully done since the Afghan troop surge early 2010, to stopping the Haqqani network from executing their deadly attacks, Secretary Panetta's message should cause the Pakistani government to pause.
The United States means business. We are going to win this War in Afghanistan, and since our soldiers have done their job incredibly well in Afghanistan - now it is time for you to your job in Pakistan. But our patience is running out and the job will be done with, or without your assistance.
Secretary Panetta has impressed me with his leadership in the Defense Department.
What say you on this very important news involving Pakistan's role in our ongoing War in Afghanistan?
