In an annual speech before his Shura Council today, Saudi Arabian King Abdullah al-Saud granted women the full legal right to run and vote in municipal elections starting in 2015. He also announced that women will be appointed to his currently all-male Shura Council as well.
Who else didn't see this coming?
At the risk of sounding too gleeful, I think the Saudi Arabian Kingdom - or at least some in the royal family -are starting to realize the mistake of enslaving 50% of their populace for outright oppressive religious dogma. And if so - the expansion of franchisement is excellent news.
We are talking about Saudi Arabia, so we should only expect baby steps, but this was one giant step in the right direction.
What say you?
