Many places across the globe are experiencing
rough and violent times. Some struggling countries are dealing with
issues like hunger, war, and other types of devastation. It is not uncommon
to see headlines about sub-standard living conditions in forming countries.
But even amidst the turmoil good can be found. Some countries are making
strides in their goal to achieve a higher standard of living, improved
safety and social well-being for the citizens, and stronger infrastructures
that allow for improved accessibility and communications.
Developing countries are
destined to travel a long and difficult journey. The complexities and
trials can be never-ending. The troubles are multiplied when these countries
are virtual combat zones. The wreckage left behind after war can be
overwhelming. Fortunately, even amid such bleakness, there are good
people willing to work toward the good of the masses.
The Mahatma Gandhi Humanitarian
Award
During such trying times
some leaders have been recognized for the way they lead and inspire
others, and some have been acknowledged as true humanitarians. The Mahatma
Gandhi Humanitarian Award is designed to give recognition to those that
endeavor to assist society to achieve high values and a better way of
life.
Ehsan Bayat, Senator in the Afghanistan
Upper House, received
the award in 2010. He was recognized for his lifelong efforts to help
others. The Bayat Foundation demonstrates this as the foundation works
diligently to improve the quality of life for the poor and elderly,
as well as for women and the youth of Afghanistan. Besides promoting
orphanages and schools the foundation also works to construct and improve
the infrastructure and cultural and economic programs.
UNESCO – Recognition &
Commendations
One of the special agencies
of the United Nations is that of the United Nations Educational, Scientific
and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The agency’s purpose is to use
education, culture and science to help promote security and peace. This
is an international collaboration that strives to support and uphold
human rights, fundamental freedoms and justice. Various countries and
leadership that further these causes are recognized by UNESCO.
For example, the 2012
UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation was awarded
to Mbaru Niang, which is a village in Indonesia. The Ministerial Forum
of the Asia Pacific region took place in May, 2012. During the event
Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director-General, praised the leadership of Bangladesh
in its successes in promoting cultural diversity and triumphs in human
development. During September, 2012, Thailand was commended for its
leadership efforts in the global educational agenda.
