Rep. Braley Blames Filibuster For Senate Budget Failure; Seeks Election to Senate
Representative Braley is seeking the Democratic nomination for the 2014 U.S. Senate election to replace Senator Tom Harkin in the great state of Iowa, and during a recent interview he was asked why we have seen not one budget make it through the upper house of congress in literally years...
Braley's response? The filibuster and the Senate's super-majority rule for advancing legislation to a formal floor vote, which is called cloture and is a matter of closing debate.
Which is absolutely, 100% incorrect because budgets require only a simple up or down, fifty plus one floor vote. There are no filibusters allowed for legislation concerning the national budget - only the majority party presenting theirs, or the House's proposal, for the upcoming fiscal year and after brief debate a vote is held.
But it's nice to know a elected member of Congress and a candidate for U.S. Senate knows the facts and parliamentary procedures for the position he is currently campaigning for and isn't an ignorant buffoon like most... Oh, wait... He is.
