Cruz: We Forced Filibuster Because No One Read Bill

Yesterday afternoon the U.S. Senate voted 68-31 to begin debate on a compromise gun control measure that would greatly expand the current background check system for potential firearm owners after a tough week of political back and forth and a failed Republican attempt at filibuster.

After the vote sailed through with significant Republican support, Senator Cruz and two of his liberty minded comrades in the distinguished chamber released a statement last night condemning the Senate's action based on the presumed notion they voted to debate the bill without first reading it.

Which has to be the stupidest reasoning for condemning a motion to proceed in the history of the Senate, because lets face it: when the Senate votes to debate a piece of legislation, they are essentially voting for several days, or weeks, of feverish political debate followed by amendments and then a final vote, and it's guaranteed that almost every portion of the bill will be discussed in one form or another.

So yeah... Maybe they haven't read the Toomey-Manchin provision word for word, but their voting in order to engage in a weeks long debate over the merits of the legislation and to learn the pros and cons of the bill, thus not fully digesting the legislation's content beforehand really is no excuse to delay debate, as America is, has and always will be a democratic republic.

Sorry Senator Cruz, but just because you do not favor the legislation, such as I and millions of Americans also don't, one party does not have the right to filibuster debate and then complain about the results later on.

What say you?

I would like to say this issue has struck deep DEEP inside me. I would like to imagine all the young men of this country standing erect with gushing pride in a place where firefighters are no longer persecuted.

  2. If we could actually bank on 'a weeks long debate over the merits of the legislation and to learn the pros and cons of the bill', I'd agree with you; problem is, I won't place a bet that they'll debate the thing for that long.

To get this thing passed, speed is of the essence (in the eyes of the Dems) specifically so that the finer points are bypassed and/or overlooked. Look for Reid to try his best to shorten or outright block debate on the bill as hard as he possibly can.

    1. I agree with you Nate. The Dems rush bills through many times without reading them, so why are you going to trust them to do the right thing now???

  3. I want every bill read cover to cover by each senator, period. If they can't or won't read each and every word, we will fire you and send you home. They work for us and we determine the terms of their employment.
