Immigration Reform Should Focus on Security and Protection of U.S.
In the aftermath of last week's Boston Marathon attack and subsequent death/detainment of both suspects, politicians are exploiting the immigration status of the accused bombers for political gain in their push for immigration reform, arguing that this is the perfect reason why the current system needs to be fixed now.
However, in all honestly, it's more of a reason to step back from the current proposals and to evaluate what exactly needs to be done with this country's continuously porous borders and even more dysfunctional immigration system.
And what needs to be done isn't the naturalization of eleven million illegal aliens, people we know nothing of or what their political ideologies are, but the immediate sealing of our five thousand miles of land that makes up our continental borders with Mexico and Canada in order to prevent the arrival of more illegal aliens that we know nothing of and could potentially sneak through in the last seconds while residency is debated in the Congress.
Which brings me to my next point.
We have eleven million people living in the United States today that we have no record of. They could be anyone with any agenda capable of destruction and chaos within our borders. Naturalizing them and giving them residency would appear to be a good start to discovering their motives, however, we have not even accomplished that with legal immigrants.
Such as our two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings. Both immigrated to the United States from a separatist region of Russia's Caucuses Mountains and have maintained residency (one became a citizen no more then seven months ago) in this country for over ten years, but when a foreign government asked U.S. officials to investigate at least one of them, our internal security completed a brief investigation and closed it as soon as it was opened.
We didn't keep tabs on the suspect. We didn't further investigate after he visited Russia unexplained for 6 months and we obviously didn't heed the warnings of his home country into his political ideology.
If we can't even manage to keep our eyes on legal immigrants that we have received warnings of and have even investigated before, do we really want to trust the potential naturalization and acceptance of eleven million people we have no clue as to who they are?
These are the issues that have to be dealt with as we consider immigration. Fully sealing our border to prevent the continuance of illegal immigration into the nation and the reforming of legal immigration to both get a better idea of who is coming to this nation and how to keep tabs on them once they have arrived.
What say you?
