In response to a report the Department of Justice is planning to file criminal corruption charges against him, U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) said that he has always conducted himself "appropriately and in accordance with the law."
“Let me be very clear — very clear — I have always conducted myself appropriately and in accordance with the law.
“I fight for these issues, and the people of our country every single day. That’s who I am, and I’m not going anywhere," Menendez said during a new conference on Friday.
“As we have said before, we believe all of the senator’s actions have been appropriate and lawful and the facts will ultimately confirm that.
"Any actions taken by Sen. Menendez or his office have been to appropriately address public policy issues and not for any other reason,” Tricia Enright, Menendez’ communication director, said in a statement to Pundit Press.
The Justice Department expected to accuse Menendez using his U.S. Senate office to promote the interests of Democratic donor Dr. Salomon Melgen. Melgen is South Florida eye doctor and close personal friend of Menendez.
“Anyone who knows us knows he and his family, and me and my family, have been real friends for more than two decades,” Menendez said of his relationship with Dr. Melgen.
