On Monday, President Obama and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Gina McCarthy talked about the Clean Power Plan.
"Today after working with states and cities and power companies, the EPA is setting the first ever nationwide standards to end the limitless dumping of carbon pollution from power plants.
"Washington is starting to catch up with the vision of the rest of the country.
"This is one of those rare issue, because of its magnitude, because of its scope, that is we don't get it right, we may not be able to reverse.
"No challenge poses a greater threat to our future, and future generations, than a changing climate," President Obama said.
"This plan is all pain and no gain. That's why state leaders across the country are coming to the same conclusion -- that we should not sacrifice our power system to an unworkable plan built on a faulty interpretation of the law," Luke Popovich, vice president of communications for the National Mining Association, said.
"Power plants are the single biggest source of harmful carbon pollution that contributes to climate change. Until now, there have been no federal limits to the amount of carbon pollution plants dump in the air," President Obama said in a video released by the White House this past weekend.
The White House claims the Clean Power Plan will:
1. Provide significant public health benefits – The Clean Power Plan, and other policies put in place to drive a cleaner energy sector, will reduce premature deaths from power plant emissions by nearly 90 percent in 2030 compared to 2005 and decrease the pollutants that contribute to the soot and smog and can lead to more asthma attacks in kids by more than 70 percent. The Clean Power Plan will also avoid up to 3,600 premature deaths, lead to 90,000 fewer asthma attacks in children, and prevent 300,000 missed work and school days.
2. Create tens of thousands of jobs while ensuring grid reliability.
3. Drive more aggressive investment in clean energy technologies than the proposed rule, resulting in 30 percent more renewable energy generation in 2030 and continuing to lower the costs of renewable energy.
4. Save the average American family nearly $85 on their annual energy bill in 2030, reducing enough energy to power 30 million homes, and save consumers a total of $155 billion from 2020-2030.
5. Give a head start to wind and solar deployment and prioritize the deployment of energy efficiency improvements in low-income communities that need it most early in the program through a Clean Energy Incentive Program.
6. Continue American leadership on climate change by keeping us on track to meet the economy-wide emissions targets we have set, including the goal of reducing emissions to 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020 and to 26-28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025.
So the Obama Administration's EPA response to being rebuked by the Supreme Court is to come up with even harsher job killing regulations. Such poor policy on so many levels it is hard to know where to begin.
Everyone knows the earth has had numerous cycles in climate. Most have been gradual and non-catastrophic.
Go back 20 years and look at what the environmental "experts" said was going to happen in global warming, and compare to what has happened. It becomes obvious that the experts were completely wrong.
Yet Obama and today's environmental "experts" suggest that global warming is "settled science". Even the phrase is wrong, as science continues to evolved. The world was flat was settled science years ago.
But worse is the continue abuse of power by the Obama administration, which has become a daily occurance. The rule of law takes time. Throw enough lawless acts forward and the lawful process tends to get overwhelmed.
We also know that various groups promoting the theory of man-made climate change have been caught lying about the data, specifically the group at East Anglia (Climategate) and Michael Mann who promoted the completely debunked hockey stick theory. We also know that the IPCC has consistently over-written the data in it's Summary Report to sensationalize non events in hopes of causing fear in the world.
Finally, not one plan provided by the Climate mongers will do anything other than raise tax money for governments. If this last fact doesn't tell you everything you need to know, you are willfully blind.
Renewable isn't renewable if you look at the full cycle requirements. Solar is probably the least renewable energy source we have. The major solar plant in Southern California out near Victorville will be effectively useless by 2018 because the water required to keep the panels clean and general evaporative loss from cooling the indirect heating will be exhausted.
For the direct electrical production, a metal that is required in the most effective panels, which aren't all that great, is called indium. At the current rate of panel production, indium will be exhaused by 2019 and, poof, no more panels available for Tesla charge stations.
"Renewable" energy, aka solar and wind, can never be baseload generators, i.e. power sources to supply a major metropolitan area 24/7/365. Sometimes the wind doesn't blow. The sun only shines half the day and far less than that during cold winters. Electricity cannot be stored at massive level - no batteries or capacitors exist to do that. All renewable sources will require baseload sources to back them up..... those would be coal, nat gas or nuclear.
This is just another example of politicized bureaucrats making bad policy based on really crummy ideology that is passed-off as science. Washington DC needs more engineers and fewer lawyers.
Complete nonsense any way you look at it. 40 billion in health benefits? I guess it will pay for Obamacare then. Stop climate change? CO2 induced climate change has not been shown to exist. Reduce CO2? What about other CO2 sources and sinks such as manufacturing in Asia and deforestation in South America? The legislation doesn't effect that.
Complete nonsense.
This is just another progressive liberal scam to impose yet more taxes (in disguise - like record breaking fines to Chrysler, which get passed on to consumers), to line the pockets of lifer, corrupt, morally bankrupt politicians and lifer, corrupt, morally bankrupt civil servants and their cronies. Now that they have the younger generation hooked on power for everything digital, the sky's the limit on how much they fleece us under the guise of "caring about the earth."
There is much we don't know about the effect of CO2 on climate and global warming. Alarmists base their positions on the behavior of only one part--greenhouse effects--of the overall climate system, major parts of which we still don't understand well.
Not long ago NASA discovered that high altitude atmospheric CO2 actually reflects large amounts of the incoming radiation from the sun.
My point is that there is much that we still don't know. I would posit the hypothesis, meaning something to be tested, that the more CO2 we pump into the lower atmosphere, the more seeps into the upper atmosphere to help keep solar radiation from coming through.
There is therefore a balance between greenhouse warming and upper atmosphere cooling for which we don't know the overall net effect. It is suggestive, however, that even as CO2 concentrations in the lower atmosphere have increased, during the last fifteen years the warming predicted by existing models has not occurred.
The latest EPA mandates, therefore, may actually have the opposite of their intended effect. Remember the saying that "you can't fool Mother Nature." Only liberals believe they can do better.
