As if the 2016 election season couldn't get any hotter, it appears that a new phase has further complicated the race. First Donald Trump slammed the family of a fallen soldier, drawing criticism from left and right alike. Then Trump stated that his temperament was excellent, according to his friends. As though the election week seemed as though it couldn't get any worse for Trump, Clinton seems to be making her fair share of mistakes.
For whatever reason, the Florida DNC invited the father of Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooter Omar Mateen, Seddique Mateen, to one of her rallies in Flordia, seated directly behind her. The optics were beyond terrible, especially as Mateen has come out very strongly for Mrs. Clinton. Mr. Mateen gained notoriety after the shooting for supporting the Taliban and calling for the death of gay people.
There is still a lot of time before the election in November. The unconventional path of the election seems like it will continue. It also seems like neither Clinton nor Trump will be able to fully answer questions about their competence or gaffes. Hopefully there will be more information that will come out that will help voters choose a candidate, perhaps even a third party candidate. The Libertarian Party's Gary Johnson and the Green Party's Jill Stein both have been making strong pitches for disaffected Democratic and Republican Party voters that are not happy with the current frontrunners.
