In a statement Wednesday afternoon, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders claimed that Chief of Staff John Kelly was upset over "pastries and cheese," not President Trump's statement about Germany being captives of Russia.
The comment by the President came during a breakfast with NATO allies.
"Germany, as far as I’m concerned, is captive to Russia because it’s getting so much of its energy from Russia," Mr. Trump told guests. "We have to talk about the billions and billions of dollars that’s being paid to the country we’re supposed to be protecting you against."
In video of the breakfast, Mr. Kelly can be seen watching the President speak, then quickly looking away and pursing his lips at the moment President Trump says Germany is captive to Russia.
Secretary Sanders said that was not a sign of disagreement with the President, but the moment Mr. Kelly realized that he would only be eating "pastries and cheese" for breakfast.
She explained, "[Kelly] was displeased because he was expecting a full breakfast and there were only pastries and cheese."
