The New York Times is reporting what has already been released through anecdotes and smaller reports. Violent crime across the United States, especially in large cities is currently undergoing a sharp increase.
Even though the year is only two thirds through, there have been more murders in many cities than in all of 2014. The biggest example is Milwaukee, which has already seen a 76% increase. St. Louis and Baltimore have seen similar figures at about 60% higher each.
