The northern Afghan city of Kunduz fell to the Taliban over the last several days. Formerly a stronghold of the regime before the 2001 invasion, it is now back in its hands. The city's capture is a major coup and the Taliban followed it up by releasing hundreds of convicts and terrorists from jail.
This is a major black eye and could be part of a much worse wave to come. The
Atlantic covered the attack.
